Back in the 80’s, He-Man attained a pretty strong following with his hit animated series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. But it’s been ages since he’s been in theaters, aside from a recent documentary looking at his historic rise. That will change soon because Sony Pictures has set a date for the new He-Man movie.
As reported by Deadline, the studio will team up with Mattel Films to put Masters of the Universe in theaters on March 5, 2021. The film’s original release date was originally set for sometime later this year. As previously reported, Noah Centineo will play He-Man and Adam and Aaron Nee will direct. The Nee brothers will also work on the script alongside writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
The last time fans properly saw He-Man on the big screen was back in 1987. Masters of the Universe was released under the Cannon Films label through producers Yoram Globus and Mehahem Golan. It featured Dolph Lundgren in the role of He-Man, as he battled Frank Langella’s Skeletor for control of Castle Grayskull. At the time, it was a box office failure, with only $17.3 million. But it’s since become a cult classic with fans, despite its cheesy dialogue and effects.
Story details for the new film aren’t available just yet, but will likely focus on He-Man once again taking on Skeletor. Hopefully, we’ll get more details on the months ahead as the film starts to shift into production.
Interest in He-Man regenerated in 2002 with a new animated series, which ran for two seasons. Although He-Man hasn’t turned up lately, fans have seen quite a bit of his twin sister, She-Ra. She currently stars in the animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which is available on Netflix.
