New York City faced a huge power outage in Manhattan on Sunday that caused subways and businesses to shut down.

Many of the city’s landmarks – such as Times Square and Rockefeller Center, went completely dark because of the NYC power outage.

Con Edison took it to Twitter to comment on the incident, “Power is being restored on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and we’re estimating most customers will be restored at midnight.”

Coincidentally, the outage took place on the anniversary of the 1977 blackout which caused most of the city to lose power. In 2003, the city faced another outage.

New York City Council speaker, Corey Johnson, confirmed the major disturbance at Con Edison’s substation on Twitter.

The streets outside Carnegie Hall were completely dark aside from car lights and a mobile hot dog stand. Volunteers from Idaho and Texas were attending a concert at the hall and chose to hold out glow sticks and direct traffic.

“No one was listening to [the traffic director], so we just decided to step up and start directing people to that sidewalk,” said Kadyn Potocki, 14, who lives in Dallas.

NYC subway warned everyone on Twitter: “Because of the ongoing power outages, there is limited subway service into Manhattan from Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.”
